"Between the Dying and the Dead: Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s Life and the Battle to Legalize Euthanasia”
By Neal Nicol and Harry Wylie
University of Wisconsin Press, 2006
The first authorized biography of Dr. Jack Kevorkian was released in May, 2006. The book contains references to Geoffrey Fieger, including this bit of his closing arguments in the 1994 Thomas Hyde trial:
“…humanity and compassion are on trial. You will be deciding one of the great issues in the struggle for human rights. His intent is never to kill someone, but only to reduce suffering. That is Dr. Jack Kevorkian. That is the man who stands charged before you. You will decide how much suffering all of us must endure before we go into that good night … some of us not so gently.”
At 30 years old, Thomas Hyde was the youngest person Kevorkian assisted, giving him a lethal dose of carbon monoxide through a mask on Aug. 4, 1993. Fieger successfully defended Kevorkian until he chose to represent himself. Now 78, Kevorkian currently is serving a 10- to 25-year prison sentence in the Thumb Correctional Facility for assisting in the suicide of Thomas Youk, 52. Many believe if Fieger had represented him, he would be free today.
