9-Year-Old Anyiahlah Greer Dead Following Routine Surgery
Anyiahlah Greer, daughter to Sonia Gambrell, died three hours after a routine tonsillectomy. Greer, who underwent the surgery for sleep apnea was only 9 years old. According to the lawsuit against the hospital, it is alleged that Greer was discharged prematurely since, under federal law, you cannot discharge patients unless they are in stable condition. Results from an autopsy report have not been reported yet, but given the young girl’s untimely death shortly after being discharged, how stable her condition was is being questioned.
As the third most common childhood surgery, following circumcisions and ear tubes, it is quite rare for death to occur in a procedure that is performed on a daily basis. In fact, the procedure’s more common risks are hemorrhaging or reactions to anesthesia.
After Greer was discharged from a surgery that lasted over two hours, her mother explained that her daughter was feeling groggy. Gambrell tried to fill a prescription for oxycodone, but multiple pharmacies denied her request, citing government regulations. When she checked on her daughter, Gambrell saw that she was unresponsive as she fell forward while seated in the back of the car.
According to medical reports, it is possible that Greer had an obstructed airway or heart condition, but only the autopsy report will shed light on what truly went wrong with this supposedly routine surgery.
