What are the Different Levels of Burn Injuries and Symptoms?

In terms of burn injuries, there are a number of different things that individuals should understand regarding what to expect and how to treat the burns. However, it is important to start at the beginning and fully understand just how severe burn injuries can be.

Based on the symptoms, burn injuries are categorized on three different levels, including first degree, second degree, and third degree. Here are some of the symptoms associated with each level of burns and what it means for you as an injured party.

First-Degree Burn Injuries

When a person sustains a first-degree burn, this is the mildest of the burns and doesn’t typically result in long-term problems. This type of burn mostly impacts the epidermis, which is the outer layer of the skin. First-degree burns are most often associated with just redness and pain in the affected area.

Second-Degree Burn Injuries

These burns are a bit more severe and they most often result in damage to both the top layer of skin (the epidermis) and the second layer of skin (the dermis). These cause some serious damages to the skin that can result in a lot of pain.

Some of the symptoms associated with second-degree burns can include redness and swelling in the area, or white or splotchy skin. The affected area may have blisters and leave some scarring. Overall, the pain level may be severe.

Third-Degree Burn Injuries

These are the most severe burn injuries and result in significant symptoms experienced by the victim. It doesn’t impact just the layers of skin, it can reach the fat under the skin. In terms of appearance, the affected area may give off a leathery experience, as well as black, brown, or white skin.

In the most severe cases, these types of injuries can result in nerve damage, resulting in the victim feeling numb at the affected area.

Unfortunately, not all burn injuries are the result of negligence. When they are, however, it’s important for injured parties to seek compensation from the responsible party. Our Michigan burn injury attorneys are here to help.
