The family of Aiyana Stanley-Jones, who was killed by a Detroit police
officer in May 2010 during a raid, are seeking damages of at least $75,000
in a wrongful death suit filed at the U.S. District Court in Detroit by
attorney Geoffrey N. Fieger. The lawsuit named Officer Joseph Weekley,
Robert Rowe, the Detroit Police Department, members of the department’s
Special Response Team and the city of Detroit.

The lawsuit alleges that Weekly and Rowe unlawfully seized Stanley-Jones
and used excessive and unlawfully deadly force, which ultimately lead
to her death. The lawsuit alleges that Rowe threw a flash-bang grenade
through the window of Aiyana’s family home, and police proceeded
to blindly fire shots. The lawsuit also states that there was an intentional
cover-up to hide the events that lead to her untimely death.

The misdemeanor count was dismissed in January, prompting Geoffrey to proceed
with the wrong death suit.
