windy road signAccidents can happen anywhere on the road, at any time, but the fact is that some roads are more dangerous than others and experience a higher rate of crashes. In fact, according to the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit, 30% of Michigan car crashes occur on just 20 intersections across the state.

In 2015, the intersection that saw the most crashes – a total of 186, to be exact – was Pontiac Trail and Martin Parkway. This intersection is a large roundabout in an area with a high volume of traffic and, despite its appearance at the top of the list, none of its crashes resulted in fatalities, though 18 injuries were reported. Moreover, 186 crashes are well above its usual average of 100 crashes.

Telegraph Road and 12 Mile Road had 132 crashes, nearly tied with 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, which had 131 crashes. These are both busy intersections that draw in a large influx of commuters and shoppers on a daily basis. Telegraph, in particular, also experiences a lot of high-speed traffic.

Of the top ten most dangerous intersections, most were either in Oakland County or Macomb County. Additionally, many of the more accident-heavy intersections were roundabouts, some of which were recently converted. This could mean that crash numbers may dwindle for some of these intersections in the future, as it did with State Street and Ellsworth, which was once at the top of the list following its conversion into a roundabout.
