Largest Verdict In The USA for 2018
Fieger hails jurors as heroes
Nationally known trial lawyer, Geoffrey Fieger, announced today that a Wayne County jury, sitting in the courtroom of Judge Brian Sullivan, after a 2 week trial, returned a verdict on Monday, July 2, 2018 against the Detroit Medical Center, totaling $135 Million Dollars as a result of crippling injuries suffered by 10 year old Faith DeGrand, a Wyandotte resident. Faith is now 17 years old.
The facts at trial showed that the DMC doctors who had operated on Faith’s spine for a simple scoliosis surgery ignored immediate signs and symptoms that showed that her spinal cord was being compressed and injured by hardware placed in her spine by the doctors. Instead of relieving the compression of her spinal cord, Faith’s doctor went on vacation two times, and left her alone lying paralyzed, and incontinent of bowel and bladder for 10 days until another doctor recognized her serious condition and took out all of the hardware which was causing her paralysis. It was too late. Faith was left with permanent quadraparesis of her four extremities, and permanent loss of bowel and bladder control. Faith was in a wheel chair for a year.
Fieger stated:
“The defense was mind boggling. At trial the DMC falsely claimed that a phantom blood clot, that no doctor ever saw, was the cause of Faith’s injuries, and that there was nothing they could do to prevent it. The hero jury saw through this fabrication, and awarded appropriate damages for these horrific life destroying injuries.”
It is believed that this verdict is the largest single medical malpractice verdict in the country.
